slavery doesn’t always come in the form you might expect. sure, sweat shops, illegal immigration scams, and the sex trade are obvious. what about some not so obvious forms of slavery?

i saw this photo essay on Fox News this morning. i’ll issue a warning that some of these photos are a little graphic.. click here

these are photos of women who have been injured by burns. in Pakistan, a fairly strict islamic nation, men burn their wives (or love interests) for any number of offenses. some of these women had acid thrown in their face by the young man (and i use the term “man” loosely…) they rejected for marriage. some of these women were doused in gasoline and set afire because they couldn’t offer a large enough dowry.

womens rights are lacking in many developing nations such as Pakistan, and are especially lacking in the middle east due to the teachings of islam. islam strips women of all worth and individuality, and the men who are offended by something so trite as a small dowry take care of what’s left by burning their bodies. islam deems that women are nothing more than property. sure sounds like slavery to me.

let’s pray for these women. let’s pray that they come to realize that, no matter what islam does, no matter what angry men do, these women are beautiful in the eyes God. that they are worthy of love, respect and honor. that they are more than what the people surrounding them say they are.
